Give short shrift - 부당하게 대우하다
Shrift is an ancient religious word meaning a confession of sins to a priest. In those days criminal about to be executed were given such little time to make their confessions that they were said to be given short shrift. Today, the idiom has nothing to do with criminals or priests: it's commonly used to mean being unfriendly or treating someone in an inconsiderate way. "The ice cream man gave me short shrift," Angela frowned.
